Open source λέγονται τα προγράμματα των οποίων η διανομή γίνεται μαζί με τον πηγαίο τους κώδικα (σε αντίθεση με τα εμπορικά πακέτα λογισμικού). Δίνεται έτσι η δυνατότητα επέμβασης στον κώδικα με στόχο την προσαρμογή του λογισμικού στις ανάγκες και τις απαιτήσεις του που έχει ο κάθε χρήστης.
