Οι εξωτερικοι δίσκοι συνδέονται συνήθως με τρία διαφορετικά πρωτόκολα.
USB (το συνηθέστερο)
IEEE 1394 ή FIREWIRE
eSATA
τα δύο πρώτα εφόσον υπάρχουν απλώς συνδέουμε τον δίσκο και αν δεν υπάρχει πρόβλημα τότε αναγνωρίζεται από το λειτουργικό σύστημα
για το eSATA αν δεν είναι HOT SWAP τότε συνδέουμε τον δίσκο με σβηστό υπολογιστή.
Αναγνωρίζονται από όλα τα λειτουργικά συστήματα.
