Το πυθαγόρειο θεώρημα σχετίζεται με ορθογώνια τρίγωνα. Σ’ αυτά ισχύει η σχέση α2=β2+γ2 όπου τα τετράγωνα των δύο καθέτων πλευρών του τριγώνου (β,γ) ισούται με το τετράγωνο της υποτείνουσας (δηλ. της μεγαλύτερης πλευράς του τριγώνου βρίσκεται απέναντι από την ορθή γωνία του ορθ. τριγώνου)
