Το σίγουρο είναι πως στις Φιλιππίνες τον 16ο αιώνα οι κυνηγοί χρησιμοποιούσαν ένα όπλο που αποτελούνταν από μια πέτρα δεμένη σε ένα μακρύ σκοινί, το οποίο το ονόμαζαν yo-yo. Από εκεί πήρε την ονομασία του το γνωστό σε εμάς παιχνίδι.
