Γίνεται δηλαδή εκμετάλλευση των ήδη υπαρχόντων γραμμών για φτηνή τηλεφωνία (συνήθως μεταξύ εταιρειών). VoIP είναι και η επικοινωνία με φωνή μέσω του πασίγνωστου Skype (http://www.skype.com) στο οποίο μας δίνεται η ευκαιρία να συνομιλήσουμε με ήχο και εικόνα με έναν άλλο χρήστη Skype όπου κι αν βρίσκεται ή να πληρώσουμε κάποιο χαμηλό ποσό και να κάνουμε τα τηλεφωνήματά μας (συνήθως σε σταθερή γραμμή) μέσα από τον υπολογιστή μας με πολύ χαμηλό κόστος και καλή ποιότητα φωνής (εξαρτάται από την ταχύτητα της γραμμής ADSL που διαθέτουμε)
